MRI-free neuronavigation for transcranial magnetic stimulation in severe depression

چکیده
This paper presents a MRI-free neuronavigation technique for repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS). This method is composed of three steps: 1) surface sampling of the subject’s scalp and face thanks to a 3D tracker, followed by Poisson surface reconstruction, 2) non-linear surface registration of an atlas surface to the extracted surface using an efficient modified non-linear EM-ICP algorithm [2], and 3) extrapolation of the transformation to a cortical stimulation target. Results have been obtained on a database of 10 subjects and have shown an accuracy of 10.2 mm. Although clearly less accurate than neuronavigation on the subject’s MRI, we advocate that this neuronavigation method is reproducible and acceptable for routine application of rTMS in severe depression.

Concordance Between BeamF3 and MRI-neuronavigated Target Sites for Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation of the Left Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex
BACKGROUND The dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) is a common target for repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in major depression, but the conventional "5 cm rule" misses DLPFC in >1/3 cases. Another heuristic, BeamF3, locates the F3 EEG site from scalp measurements. MRI-guided neuronavigation is more onerous, but can target a specific DLPFC stereotaxic coordinate directly. T...
متن کاملMRI-guided dmPFC-rTMS as a Treatment for Treatment-resistant Major Depressive Disorder.
Here we outline the protocol for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) guided repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) to the dorsal medial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). Technicians used a neuronavigation system to process patient MRIs to generate a 3-dimensional head model. The head model was subsequently used to identify patient-specific sti...

متن کاملTowards localization of transcranial magnetic stimulation inside the MRI scanner
Background and Motivations: Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) has been used as a non-invasive tool in various neuroscience applications including investigating brain functions, serving as a clinical diagnostic tool and as a therapy for several neuropsychiatric disorders [1]. TMS delivers time-pulse magnetic fields created by special coils to induce local currents in the tissue i.e., neuro...

BACKGROUND Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation has been explored in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder, but with negative or conflicting results. This randomized double-blind study was designed to assess the efficacy of 1-Hz repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation over the presupplementary area. METHODS Forty medication-resistant patients were assigned to 4 weeks of eit...
